Australian Mineral Makeup and Cosmetics Company, Alexami, Defies Product Shrinkage Trend

January 22, 2011 · Posted in Cheap Makeup Brushes · Comment

Alexami Mineral Makeup Comparison Chart

Gold Coast, Australia (PRWEB) June 26, 2010

‘Product Shrinkage’ is on the increase across the globe, but one Australian natural cosmetics company is aiming to halt the trend. Alexami Cosmetics, a professional-grade natural mineral cosmetics brand distributed across Australian beauty salons, spas, hair salons, naturopaths, skin clinics and other beauty professionals, can only be bought in larger product sizes. This is because Alexami’s founder, Alenka Dirnbek, claims that excess packaging is both bad for the environment and misleading for consumers.

So what is product shrinkage, otherwise known as ‘packaging shrink’? It’s when a product’s contents get smaller, yet the packaging size and price remains the same. It’s becoming more commonplace as things like commodity prices, freight and production costs have climbed. Rather than pass on another price hike to customers, some companies opt to reduce product volume, yet this can be misleading for consumers because the actual size of the packaging may look the same, yet the content’s weight has been reduced.

In Australia, widespread customer backlash has occurred when popular brands of chocolate and beer have gone under the ‘grocery shrink ray’. But price per volume comparison is becoming easier in supermarkets thanks to the recent introduction of mandatory unit pricing, which is the display of product cost according to weight or other measurements, such as cost per sheet of toilet paper, to enable customers to more easily compare different sizes of the same product type.

Yet for goods not sold in supermarkets, no such mandatory laws yet exist. This makes it increasingly hard for consumers, and also poses challenges for environmentally and socially conscious brands like Alexami Cosmetics that strive to offer a larger quantity of quality product at what may outwardly seem like a higher price.

For example, Alexami’s signature product, a professional grade natural mineral foundation powder, bronzer and setting powder is 20g Net Wt, more than double the standard size of 8g and an astounding five times bigger that the increasingly common 4g product size. When Alexami Cosmetics initially began approaching its core target market of beauty salons and professional makeup artists to distribute the product, some expressed concerned about product pricing. Comparable products from other manufacturers seem cheaper when the packaging is compared side by side, when in reality the Alexami product is up to 60% lower in price when the price per unit volume ratio is evaluated.

As cosmetics sold outside supermarkets are not subject to mandatory unit pricing, it is up to consumers to do their homework. “It’s becoming more common for people to check labels to avoid toxic ingredients, so we’d also like to urge consumers to compare product sizing while they are shopping too,” said Dirnbek.

Alexami’s efforts to reduce packaging are just one factor that the brand has considered to become an environmentally sound choice. “All our packaging and marketing materials are printed with soy ink on recycled paper using 100% waterless print technology, we also offer product refills and larger product volume sizes to cut back on unnecessary packaging waste, and we use renewable bamboo and synthetic hair for our cosmetic brushes which makes our products cruelty-free and eco-friendly. Our aim is to give customers better value for money and help the environment by cutting back on things like extra jars, boxes, and labels,” said Dirnbek. It’s a practice she would like to see more companies adopt. “These measures also save on labour cost, and by offering refills and great value products, you will attract loyal customers as well.”

This forward thinking way of doing business is also backed up by research. Recognizing the relationship between consumer confidence and purchase behavior, a Nielsen Panel Views study in America conducted an analysis of 47,000 people across 36 product categories. The study established that decisions by manufacturers to shrink product sizes in order to prevent price hikes have overwhelmingly disappointed consumers, who instead seek larger package sizes with lower cost per unit weight.

The study also discovered product shrinkage shaved as much as 15-20% off product size, like 12 ounce bags (about 340 grams) of potato chips that had been scaled back to 10 ounces (about 280 grams), without a subsequent drop in retail price. Chocolate, breakfast cereal and personal products were the other main categories undergoing widespread product shrinkage.

As most of this product downsizing is done without public announcement, Alexami’s Dirnbek points out the only thing that consumers can do is be more wary of checking product sizing when purchasing, and support products that offer the best value to quality ratio. “When shopping I am always checking grams and ingredients. Price is not necessarily always what it seems. I want value, but I also want quality of course. Consumers need to check that only the best quality ingredients have been used too, because we’d all rather pay once than twice. If you buy something cheap and it doesn’t work, you then have to go back and buy better quality to replace it. So you pay twice and waste twice as much time. It’s better to do homework, research the content, look at weight, read descriptions and labels and make a choice based on quality and value for money.”

The entire Alexami range of professional grade natural mineral make up and cosmetics offer great value and are available exclusively through select stockists across Australia. Worldwide release dates are being scheduled for late 2010. For more information visit http://www.alexami.com

How to Create a Sultry Smoky Eye

July 19, 2010 · Posted in Cheap Makeup Brushes · Comment

If you’ve always wanted to try a sexy and illustrious smoky eye but have not yet had the courage to do so, today is your day! A smoky eye is a brilliant addition to your makeup arsenal, adding a dramatic touch for a special event or a night out. Creating a smoky eye effect is a lot easier than you’d think… Let’s begin!

To start, apply a dependable primer to your eyelids, like Bare Escentuals Prime Time Eyelid Primer – this gives the eye makeup something to stick to. A base is such an essential step in creating the smoky eye because it will keep the makeup smudged and beautiful, instead of runny and messy. For a traditional smoky eye, you will want to choose a charcoal or espresso eyeshadow color. One fantastic choice for an uncomplicated smoky eye is the Stila eye shadow pan in Storm. This is an eye makeup product in a dark charcoal shade – exactly what you need for a smoky eye!

After you have applied the base, use the Shiseido Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil to apply black eyeliner to the upper and lower lash line. After that, apply the charcoal eyeshadow over the entire eyelid. Use a neutral cream or champagne colour to blend the charcoal eyeshadow up into the brow bone so that it looks smoother and less harsh. Now comes the fun part! The quintessential look of the smoky eye is a slightly smudged effect. To achieve this smuged effect, take a clean cottonbud and and smudge the eyeliner on your lower lash line. This is something that should look very natural, yet sexy and messy at the same time. You can also go a step further and apply some of the charcoal eyeshadow with a contour brush to the lower lash line for a more dramatic smoky look.

The next step is to curl your eyelashes, and apply several coats of Lancome Virtuose Mascara. Curling your eyelashes will help to complete the look. It is essential to apply a volumizing or lengthening mascara to make a difference in bringing out the final smoky eye.

But we’re not finished yet! Finally, it is so important to groom your eyebrows as a frame for the eye makeup. Use a clean contour brush to lightly apply an eyeshadow shade that matches your hair colour. You only need to apply a very small amount of the eyeshadow to your eyebrows, and comb them into place. This will work to complete and finish your polished look of a sexy smoky eye.

If you would like to try the smoky eye with other eyeshadow shades, that is a magnificent idea! If you feel that the dramatic smoky eye is too dark for the office, then why not use something more subtle, like gold or lavender, to create a smoky eye for every day wear? The sky’s the limit!

4 Tips for Covering Pimples

July 16, 2010 · Posted in Cheap Makeup Brushes · Comment

It would not be so bad if you could just figure out a way to cover those ugly pimples that would give a more natural appearance. It seems that no matter what you do it just looks so unnatural. Some pimples are very red and the redness wants to come through the makeup. There may not be a way to make your acne invisible but there are 4 tips for covering pimples that will make them appear less noticeable.

The first of 4 tips to covering your pimples, and most important thing that you need to do, is make sure that your hands and face are clean. Hopefully, you have a cleaning regiment that has proven effective for you, most of the time. When you have acne prone skin you have to keep your skin clean to cut the oil down. Always clean our skin before you go to bed at night, no matter how tired you are or where you are.

After you have completed tip number 1 out of the 4 tips for covering your pimples you need to apply a concealer. A concealer needs to be lighter than your foundation. When you use the concealer be sure you do not put it on heavy. It works best if you use a light covering. Of course, there are some people who would recommend that you use a green or yellow tinted concealer; this is something that is a personal preference.

The number 3 tip for covering pimples is, of course, the foundation. Your foundation should match your skin tone as closely as possible and, if feasible, test a small amount to see if you are sensitive to the foundation. Your best choice is, of course, an oil free foundation and be sure that you do not skimp on this one. You need to purchase a more reputable foundation. Do not go cheap. If possible, the best choice is a masking cosmetic that can only be found in major department stores. By the way, I read a tip recently that suggested using Visine to help get the redness reduced.

Now, for tip number 4 for covering your pimples; oil-free powder. To finish your look you will need to use a powder to take away the shine. It is better to use a makeup brush instead of the makeup pad that comes with the powder, also make sure the color matches your foundation and then apply lightly. You have seen what skin looks like when the powder or foundation is too thick, so do not over do.

The next best thing to getting rid of your pimples is to cover them well. They may not disappear but you can make them less noticeable. Use these 4 tips for covering your pimples and you will be able to face your day a little better.

For those with acne that just will not go away, it can be a frustrating thing. Rita enjoys writing articles to help those that struggle with an acne problem.
